The Ship of Adventures

The Deep is suitable for events for up to 60 guests

Who: The Hackney Pirates
Where: Dalston, London E8 2NS
What: Four unique rooms available for all kinds of events
Capacity: up to 60
Price: From £25 per hour (discounts for charities and regular bookings)

By choosing this ethical venue you will be supporting the literacy, confidence and perseverance of young people in Hackney

Not quite right for your event, but you want to support them anyway? Why not sign up to volunteer with the “Young Pirates”.

I may be biased (that’s what happens when you spend 5 years of your life working for such a brilliant organisation) but you really can’t find anything like The Ship of Adventures on a high street in London. You enter the building through the hull of a pirate ship! This space is a shop and cafe during the day (also raising money to support The Hackney Pirates) but can be hired in the evening for drinks receptions, book launches, anything you like really. If you hire one of the other spaces then this would be the first thing your guests see when they arrive, it’s quite spectacular.

Enter the rest of the building through the secret passageway (made for the kids, but definitely just as much fun for the grown ups too!) and you’ll find the staircase of books, that lead you to more adventurous spaces.

The Deep is on the lower ground and has an underwater theme. There’s a stage for small performances, a projector and speakers for presentations, and it leads to a small outside courtyard, for a breath of fresh air between those intense “blue sky thinking” workshops (or blue sea, if you like…!). If you’re in need of a inspiring place for a team away day then this is the one for you. There’s plenty of space and seating for up to 40 people, and more like 60 if you’re going for more of a standing reception (we’ve definitely squeezed more in there in the summer when the courtyard is open!)

On the 1st and 2nd floors you have the Ideas Room and the Navigators office. These are great spaces for team meetings – particularly the Ideas Room, which has one giant blackboard wall so you can scribble over the walls all day. Best for up to about 12 people for a meeting, but you can get up to 20 in there standing.

The best thing about holding your events at The Ship of Adventures is that you know that you’re using spaces that host the Hackney Pirates’ after-school workshops – there are books and pieces of work everywhere, which remind you of the great things that are going on to help improve the literacy, confidence and perseverance of local young people that are falling behind at school.

The Ethical Events Company is here!

In my previous job I struggled for years to promote the brilliant spaces that were available to hire at The Hackney Pirates. There’s just so much choice out there, venue booking websites are saturated, and unless you have a huge marketing budget, you get lost in the sea of other corporate venues.

Using charities and social enterprises when booking events just makes sense, and so many people would choose to do this, but don’t know where to find suitable venues, caterers etc. For the past few years I’ve been thinking about bringing all this information together – giving not-for-profit and community organisations a platform to promote their products and services and the customer a chance to spend their money on events in the most social and ethical way possible.

This is very much a side project at the moment, so I’m keeping it simple to start with, but watch this space!
